Aluminum extrusion is a process whereby aluminum alloy is transformed into objects with a distinctive profile (in cross section). This extruded aluminum can then be used for a wide variety of applications.
Aluminum is an ideal material to use in extrusions because of its malleability, which allows it to be easily machined and cast. Yet it is also strong and stable, particularly when alloyed with other metals.
The Extrusion Process
This starts with a design, which ultimately determines many of the production parameters. The function of the profile determines the design of the die that will ultimately shape it.
- Direct Extrusion - This begins with billet, which is the name given to the aluminum material used to extrude the profiles. The billet is heated before being placed into the extrusion press. A dummy block then forces the heated and softened billet through the die (or precision opening).
- Indirect Extrusion - the die is contained within the hollow ram, which moves into the stationary billet from one end, thus forcing the metal to flow into the ram, taking on the shape of the die in the process.
Uses for Aluminum Extrusions
Extruded aluminum accounts for approximately half of all extruded metal products sold. It is used for a wide range of applications, across many different industries - on Earth and even in outer space on the International Space Station. Characteristics of aluminum, including its strength, non-magnetic properties and its infinite recyclability (without any loss of integrity), all contribute towards the popularity and varied use of extrusions made from aluminum alloys.
